Anti-Piracy
Make good stuff, then make it easy for people to buy it. There’s your anti-piracy plan.- Jonathan Coulton
When I was in high school, I downloaded the shit out of a lot of mp3s.
The most-downloaded content was: Cake, various punk acts, and Ani DiFranco.
Albums I eventually purchased: Work by all those artists.
Concerts I went to: Shows featuring all those artists.
Merch I bought: Er, mostly Ani DiFranco’s stuff, but mostly because her stuff was more accessibly priced for a teenager.
This is still true today, by the way. If I download something and I like it, I will probably go see it live, and probably buy merch. If I don’t buy the album, I will listen to it on Spotify or Pandora, which are two ways to listen to music for free, but still gets money to the artists.
I’d much rather watch a show on thenetworkthatshowison.com, or hulu, than go looking for it on TVDuck.
I like voting with my dollar. I’d rather do that than watch pirated versions of things.
And I know most other people on the internet feel the same.
